St Mary’s Choral Scholar wins national award

ElizabethWe are so excited and delighted for Elizabeth, one of St Mary’s Choral Scholars in West Malling, who was crowned the Rotary National Young Musician Vocalist of the Year 2024 for Great Britain and Northern Ireland on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

Having recently won through the the district round, Elizabeth travelled to the prestigious Chethams School of Music in Manchester to compete in the national round.

The order of performances was determined randomly, with Elizabeth drawing something of a short straw by having to go first out of the twelve contestants. It meant that Elizabeth had a long wait as the other performers took their turn and then the adjudication discussions began. But it was definitely worth the wait as Elizabeth was declared the winner!

Elizabeth has been one of our two female voice scholars at St Mary’s since the start of the 2022-2023 academic year and is now in her second year with us.

We know Elizabeth was a talented singer before she came to us but we’re so delighted for Elizabeth and so pleased to have been a small part of her continuing journey in singing. The Choral Scholars programme has enabled her to gain valuable experience, and while the singers have benefitted from the superb tuition that is provided to all the scholars, we can’t say that we aren’t enjoying the fruits of their efforts too!

St Mary’s will be recruiting for its 2024-25 scholars later this Spring. You can find out more about the programme on our website here.
